Circumcision Surgery
Circumcision is a type of surgery that removes the foreskin of the penis which is covering its tip. The surgery is generally performed in newborn babies for various purposes. However, the adults may also get this surgery done for their own reasons.
Surgical Procedure of Circumcision
The surgery is usually performed by a Urologist, an Obstetrician, a Pediatrician or a Family Medical Doctor under general anaesthesia to numb the penis. The surgeon may choose any of the three methods (i.e. Gomco clamp, Plastibell device, or Mogen clamp) to perform the surgery.
Whatever the method is chosen, the baby is laid on his back, securing his arms and legs and each method consists of cutting off the foreskin right behind the head of the penis using a scalpel or surgical scissors.
The whole process takes around 15 to 20 minutes to complete and the patient, especially the newborn baby, recovers in almost 7 to 10 days.
Benefits of Circumcision
The most common advantages of having circumcision are:
- Reduced risk of UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) in infancy
- Reduced risk of penile cancer
- Decreased risk of STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). This may include female-to-male HIV transmission
- Low risk of cervical cancer
- Easy to maintain good genital hygiene
What is the Need for Circumcision Surgery?
Although the surgery is more complex, it is possible during the newborn period. And, being an adult you may have your own reasons including:
- Personal or religious grounds
- Swelling of the foreskin (known as balanitis)
- inflammation of the foreskin and tip of the penis (referred to as balanoposthitis)
- Your inability to return a retracted foreskin to its original position (paraphimosis)
- Your inability to retract the foreskin (phimosis)
